Hiring 101: Best Practices for Finding Top Talent

Has your organization been struggling with hiring the right people for your collection team? Have you noticed a problem with retaining new hires?

If you answered yes, then you are probably worrying about staffing shortages and attracting skilled workers? The truth is every organization endures hiring and retention challenges at some time or another, especially for those of us in the debt collection industry.

Imagine coming into work and having an upbeat, driven staff that is motivated to collect. Well, I have good news for you. I have developed The Collection Advantage to help you develop incredibly loyal teams to scale your profits.

In this blog, I am excited to share with you a few best practices that have supercharged our human resources department, enabling us to create idyllic avatars to attract the right people to our team.

Pre-Interview Prep Time

To begin with, I’d like to share 3 Basic Resume Questions you should find the answers to before you decide to interview your ideal candidate. They are as follows:

  1. Does this person have the necessary educational and professional background to do the job?

  2. Are there tendencies for short-term or long-term stays at their previous jobs?

  3. Based on their skills, hobbies, and work experiences, do they seem like they would fit in well in your office and with your team?

If you’ve answered yes to all these questions, then you can confidently move forward with the interview.

The Power of Deep Listening

Another suggestion I have is to read through the resume and find three areas to highlight. These are your key points that you will be bringing up in the interview that will allow the candidate to talk. Listening to what the candidate has to say is of the utmost importance. The truth is you learn more by listening than by talking. You’ll find out what they are looking for in a job and what inspired them to apply for this job. It’s a perfect opportunity for you to gain valuable information to use in future job ads.

The Art of Motivational Interviewing

I would also like to introduce another technique I use at my agency - the art of motivational interviewing. With this technique you can ask the applicant, ‘How interested in this job are you?’ You’ll want to tell them to rate it on a scale from 1 to 10. The key is no matter what the score is on the scale, your response is always ‘Why so high?’ This is a reflective question that allows the person to think and reflect about why they are interviewing.

Again, this gives you the opportunity to truly listen and to listen deeply.
